The Gredler Technique

Faith Primary School has built its reputation on a strong core academics program, which begins with its reading system. Since the school’s original beginnings, it has used the Gredler Technique of Phonics, a comprehensive multisensory approach to teach reading, writing and language to students. The Technique is based on years of research and application, and it uses visual, auditory, and kinesthetic techniques to teach and reinforce phonics.

For over 40 years, this program has introduced students to the elements of the language systematically. Students begin by reading and writing the sounds in isolation, then begin to blend the sounds into syllables and words. Initially, students work from picture cards to build a memory bank of sounds that they then learn to write from memory, without visual clues. The incorporation of the writing program is key to the success of the program.

By writing sounds that they have learned from the picture cards, students create a neural pathway from the brain, to the hand and then to the paper, locking that sound into the brain, and building a permanent brain pattern. This enables the student to be able to read, write and de-code almost any word that either he or she comes into contact with, as opposed to guessing. A child who thinks and makes sure that a word is correct each time it is read or spelled will soon know the word without thinking about it, for the brain repeats automatically, with increasing rapidity, what it has accomplished over and over. Through the years, it has been shown that with repetition comes comprehension.

Confidence and self esteem abound in students who have mastered reading, and learning becomes a rewarding and happy experience.
